Indiana Pacers: 25 Best Players To Play For The Pacers
By Phil Watson
With the Dallas Mavericks, Detlef Schrempf has started to gain some traction as a reserve forward.
But after he was traded with a 1990 second-round pick to the Indiana Pacers in February 1989 in exchange for Herb Williams, his career took off like a rocket.
Schrempf was named Sixth Man of the year in both 1990-91 and 1991-92 and was an All-Star in 1993 for the Pacers.
In November 1993, just before the start of the season, he was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics in exchange for Derrick McKey and Gerald Paddio.
In parts of five seasons in Indiana, Schrempf averaged 17.0 points, 8.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 33.7 minutes per game, shooting .511/.296/.813.
The native of Germany averaged 15.8 points and 8.0 rebounds as a senior at Washington and was taken by the Mavericks with the eighth overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft.
With Dallas, Schrempf was second in the NBA in three-point shooting in 1986-87.
Schrempf was an All-NBA selection in 1994-95 with the Sonics and was a two-time All-Star there, posting a second-place finish in three-point shooting in 1994-95 and helping Seattle to the 1996 NBA Finals.
He signed as a free agent with the Portland Trail Blazers in August 1999. Bothered by a sore neck late in his career, he announced his retirement in October 2000 before returning to the Blazers for a final season.
