Los Angeles Clippers: 25 Best Players To Play For The Clippers
By Phil Watson
Danny Manning had won the Wooden and Naismith awards as a senior at Kansas and added Final Four Most Outstanding Player to his trophy case after leading an undermanned Jayhawks squad to a national championship.
The Los Angeles Clippers took the three-time All-American with the first overall pick in the 1988 NBA Draft, but things went sideways early.
Just 26 games into his rookie season, Manning injured his knee and it was something that affected the rest of his career.
He came back to earn two All-Star bids, but was traded in February 1994 to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Dominique Wilkins and a first-round pick in 1994.
In parts of six seasons in Los Angeles, Manning averaged 19.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocks in 34.0 minutes per game, shooting .518/.177/.741.
Manning signed with the Phoenix Suns as an unrestricted free agent in September 1994, earning Sixth Man of the Year honors with the Suns in 1997-98.
In August 1999, he was traded to the Orlando Magic and was swapped again two weeks later to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Waived in August 2000, he signed with the Utah Jazz 10 days later and signed with the Dallas Mavericks in August 2001.
Manning was waived in June 2002 and signed in February 2003 with the Detroit Pistons. He retired in September 2003.
He was named head coach at Wake Forest in April 2014 and is 24-38 in two seasons there. He was 38-29 in two seasons as head coach at Tulsa from 2012-14.
