Los Angeles Clippers: 25 Best Players To Play For The Clippers
By Phil Watson
The Los Angeles Clippers wanted an upgrade at point guard when they acquired former All-Star Sam Cassell and a first-round pick in 2012 from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Marko Jaric and Lionel Chalmers.
They got one, if only briefly. But Cassell was on the downslope of his career and a lingering hip injury slowed him down until he was waived by the Clippers in February 2008.
In parts of three seasons in Los Angeles, Cassell averaged 14.6 points, 5.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds in 28.9 minutes per game, shooting .438/.329/.873.
Cassell played his final two collegiate seasons at Florida State after transferring from the JUCO ranks, averaging 18.3 points and 4.9 assists per game as a senior.
He was the 24th overall pick by the Houston Rockets in the 1993 NBA Draft and was part of two title teams for the Rockets.
He was traded to the Phoenix Suns in August 1996, dealt again in December 1996 to the Dallas Mavericks and traded to the New Jersey Nets in February 1997.
As part of a three-team deal in March 1999, Cassell was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks.
In June 2003, he was dealt to the Timberwolves, earning All-Star honors in 2004 and an All-NBA berth in 2003-04.
After being waived by the Clips, Cassell signed with the Boston Celtics in March 2008 and earned a third championship ring. Injured and unable to play the following season, he was traded to the Sacramento Kings in February 2009 and waived the following day, prompting his retirement.
Cassell is 36th in NBA history with 5,939 assists and 37th with a free-throw percentage of .861.
He has ben an assistant coach with the Clippers since 2014.
