The Los Angeles Clippers swung a deal on draft night in 1988 to get some help at the forward spot, acquiring the rights to third overall pick Charles Smith from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for the rights to No. 6 overall selection Hersey Hawkins and a first-round pick in 1989.

Smith had averaged nearly 19 points and eight rebounds per game as a senior at Pitt and came in and earned All-Rookie honors in 1988-89.

Smith provided the Clippers with some scoring pop, twice topping the 20-points-per-game mark.

In September 1992, Smith was sent to the New York Knicks with Doc Rivers and Bo Kimble as part of a three-team trade in which the Clippers also dispatched a first-round pick in 1994 to the Orlando Magic and got back Mark Jackson and a second-round selection in 1995 from New York and Stanley Roberts from the Magic.

In four seasons in Los Angeles, Smith averaged 18.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.0 steals in 32.7 minutes per game, shooting .490/.036/.777.

With the Knicks in 1994, Smith started all seven games in the NBA Finals.

In February 1996, Smith was traded to the San Antonio Spurs and was waived in January 1998, prompting him to retire.
