The Los Angeles Clippers acquired high-flyer Ron Harper, as well as first-round picks in 1990 and 1992 and a second-round selection in 1991, from the Cleveland Cavaliers in November 1989 in exchange for Reggie Williams and the rights to Danny Ferry.

Harper sustained a serious knee injury in January 1989 and missed most of two seasons, but returned to be an effective player for the Clippers.

He left to sign with the

Chicago Bulls

as an unrestricted free agent in September 1994.

In parts of five seasons in Los Angeles, Harper averaged 19.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.0 steals in 37.7 minutes per game, shooting .436/.300/.737.

An All-American at Miami (Ohio) as a senior, Harper had back-to-back seasons of more than 24 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Harper was the eighth overall pick by the Cavaliers in the 1986 NBA Draft and was an All-Rookie selection in 1986-87, finishing fourth in the NBA in steals that season.

He was part of three championship teams in Chicago before his rights were renounced in September 1999. A month later, Harper signed with the Los Angeles Lakers and was part of two more title teams before retiring after the 2000-01 campaign.

He is 21st in NBA history with 1,716 steals and 44th with an average of 1.7 steals per game.
