Bailey Howell had made five All-Star teams before he got to the Boston Celtics, coming over in a September 1966 trade with the Baltimore Bullets for Mel Counts.

He made another trip to the All-Star Game in 1967 and helped Boston to NBA titles in 1968 and 1969.

Howell finished third in the NBA in field goal percentage in 1966-67.

Howell left the Celtics in May 1970, when he was chosen by the Buffalo Braves in the expansion draft and was immediately dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers.

In four seasons in Boston, Howell averaged 18.0 points and 8.4 rebounds in 30.7 minutes a game, shooting 48 percent from the floor and 73.9 percent from the foul line.

A two-time All-American at Mississippi State, averaging 27.1 points and 17.0 rebounds for his three-year varsity career, Howell was the second overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 1959 NBA Draft.

Howell was a four-time All-Star in Detroit before being traded to the Bullets in June 1964. He also finished fifth in the NBA in field goal percentage and rebounding in 1960-61 and fourth in field goal percentage in 1962-63.

With Baltimore, Howell was an All-Star in 1966 and was fifth in the league in field-goal percetnage in 1964-65.

After leaving the Celtics, he played one season with the 76ers before retiring in 1971.

Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997, Howell is 45th in NBA history with 9,383 rebounds and 47th with an average of 9.9 rebounds per game.
