Boston Celtics: 25 Best Players To Play For The Celtics
By Phil Watson
The Boston Celtics thought they were getting the missing piece when they traded Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, Sebastian Telfair and two first-round picks in 2009 to the Minnesota Timberwolves in July 2007 to get former NBA MVP Kevin Garnett.
They were right.
Garnett was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2007-08 and was also a five-time All-Star, four-time All-Defensive pick and an All-NBA selection in 2007-08 after coming to Boston.
He finished third in the MVP voting in 2007-08, when the Celtics captured their first NBA title since 1986.
Garnett averaged 18.2 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.0 blocks in the six-game win over the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2008 NBA Finals. In 2010, he put up 15.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, three assists, 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks in a seven-game Finals loss to the Lakers.
In July 2013, Garnett was traded with Paul Pierce, Jason Terry and D.J. White to the Brooklyn Nets for Keith Bogans, MarShon Brooks, Kris Humphries, Kris Joseph, Gerald Wallace and first-round picks in 2014, 2016 and 2018.
In six seasons with the Celtics, Garnett averaged 15.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.2 steals and a block in 31 minutes per game, shooting .520/.167/.827.
The fifth overall pick of the Timberwolves out of Farragut Career Academy in Chicago in the 1995 NBA Draft, Garnett was a 10-time All-Star in Minnesota and was the MVP in 2003-04. He returned to the Timberwolves in February 2015 in exchange for Thaddeus Young.
Garnett played just 38 games in 2015-16, averaging 3.2 points and 3.9 rebounds in 14.6 minutes per game while shooting .470/0-for-1/.667.
Garnett is fifth all-time with 1,462 games, third with 50,418 minutes, ninth with 14,662 rebounds, 47th with 5,445 assists, 16th with 1,859 steals, 17th with 2,037 blocked shots, 17th with 26,071 points and 43rd with an average of 10.0 rebounds per game.
He is under contract in Minnesota through 2016-17.
