Boston Celtics: 25 Best Players To Play For The Celtics
By Phil Watson
Rajon Rondo was acquired by the Boston Celtics on draft night in 2006, when they acquired the rights to the 21st overall pick along with Brian Grant from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a first-round pick in 2007.
His athleticism made him a prospect and he declared for the draft after his sophomore season at Kentucky, where he averaged 11.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.
Rondo had his limitations as a scorer and shooter, but he ran an offense with aplomb and defended well. He was a four-time All-Star in Boston, earning an All-NBA bid in 2011-12 and being named All-Defensive four times.
Rondo led the NBA in assists in 2011-12 and 2012-13 and in steals in 2009-10.
He helped the Celtics to the 2008 NBA title, averaging a team-high 6.7 assists per game in their six-game triumph over the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. Rondo also helped guide Boston back to the NBA Finals in 2010, where they lost in seven games to the Lakers.
His stay with the Celtics ended in December 2014, when he was traded with Dwight Powell to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Jameer Nelson, Brandan Wright, Jae Crowder, a conditional 2015 first-round pick and a second-rounder in 2016.
In parts of nine seasons with Boston, Rondo averaged 11.0 points, 8.5 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 32.9 minutes per game, shooting .473/.252/.614.
He signed a free-agent deal with the Sacramento Kings in July 2015. In 2015-16, he added a third NBA assist title to his resume, averaging 11.9 points, 11.7 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in 35.2 minutes per game on .454/.365/.580 shooting.
Rondo signed a two-year, $27 million free-agent contract with the Chicago Bulls on July 7, 2016. He is 44th in NBA history with 5,61 assists, eighth with an average of 8.7 assists per game and 24th with an average of 1.8 steals per game.
