Dallas Mavericks: 25 Best Players To Play For The Mavericks
By Phil Watson
Traded twice before he ever played an NBA game, Brendan Haywood spent nearly a decade with the Washington Wizards before being moved to the Dallas Mavericks as part of a seven-player deal in February 2010.
Haywood, along with Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson, came to Dallas in exchange for Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton.
Haywood was a part-time starter at center after coming to the Mavs, finishing fourth in the NBA in blocks per game in 2009-10.
A reserve most of the 2010-11 season, Haywood was a key role player on the team that won the NBA title, averaging 1.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and a block in just 8.5 minutes per game in the three games he played in the six-game victory over the Miami Heat, shooting 1-for-3/—/3-for-6.
A starter in 2011-12, Haywood was limited to 54 games because of injuries and was waived by Dallas in July 2012.
In parts of three seasons in Dallas, he averaged 5.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 20.9 minutes per game, shooting .550/0-for-2/442.
He averaged 12.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game as a senior at North Carolina, where he was a three year starter, and he was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 20th overall pick out of North Carolina in the 2001 NBA Draft.
Haywood was traded on draft night in June 2001 to the Orlando Magic and was swapped again in August of that year to the Wizards.
After he was cut by Dallas, Haywood signed as a free agent with the Charlotte Bobcats in July 2012. He was traded to the Cavaliers in June 2014 and in July 2015 was dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Haywood retired after being waived by Portland in July 2015 and is a college basketball analyst for CBS Sports.
He is 40th in NBA history with a field-goal percentage of .528.
