Vince Carter had taken a fall from his eight-time All-Star status by the time he signed with the Dallas Mavericks three days after being waived by the Phoenix Suns in December 2011.
But Carter was content to come to Dallas as a role player, spending most of his three seasons with the Mavericks as a sixth man.

In three seasons in Dallas, Carter averaged 12.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 25.1 minutes per game, shooting .419/.392/.820.
Carter was an All-American as a junior at North Carolina, averaging 15.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, and entered the NBA Draft following that season.
He was taken fifth in the 1998 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors and was dealt to the Toronto Raptors on draft night.
In Toronto, he was the 1998-99 NBA Rookie of the Year, a five-time All-Star and a two-time All-NBA selection. He finished fourth in the league in scoring in 1999-2000 and was fifth in 2000-01.
In December 2004, Carter was traded to the New Jersey Nets, where he was selected for three more All-Star appearances.
He was dealt to the Orlando Magic in June 2009 and traded to the Suns in December 2010.
Last season in Memphis, Carter played in 60 games, averaging 6.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in 16.8 minutes per game on .388/.349/.833 shooting.
He is 26th in NBA history with 1,274 games, 23rd with 41,336 minutes played, sixth with 1,937 three-pointers and 24th with 23,969 points.
