The Dallas Mavericks made a draft-night deal with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1998 that netted them the rights to ninth overall pick Dirk Nowitzki from DJK Wurzburg in Germany and 19th overall pick Pat Garrity from Notre Dame in exchange for the rights to Robert Traylor, the sixth overall selection out of Michigan.
Dallas won the deal … and then some.
Nowitzki has played his entire career for the Mavericks, earning MVP honors in 2006-07 and being named to 13 All-Star teams. He is also a 12-time All-NBA selection and was third in the MVP voting in both 2004-05 and 2005-06.
He’s finished in the top five in free-throw shooting six times, including a fifth-place mark in 2015-16, and was fourth in scoring in both 2004-05 and 2008-09.
A member of the Dallas teams that reached the NBA Finals in 2006 and 2011, Nowitzki averaged 22.8 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 43.7 minutes per game, shooting .390/.250/.891 in the six-game loss to the Miami Heat in 2006.
In 2011, Nowitzki averaged 26.0 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 40.4 minutes per game, winning Finals MVP honors while shooting .416/7-for-19/.978, as the Mavericks beat the Heat in six games.
In 2015-16, he put up 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds in 31.5 minutes per game on .448/.357/.893 shooting.
In 18 seasons in Dallas, Nowitzki has averaged 22.0 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 35.3 minutes per game, shooting .474/.381/.879.
He is 12th in NBA history with 1,340 games, 11th with 47,249 minutes, 15th with 1,701 three-pointers and a .879 free-throw percentage, 30th with 10,540 rebounds, sixth with 29,491 points and 29th with an average of 22.0 points per game.

Nowitzki opted out of his contract, but re-signed with the Mavericks as a free agent on July 23, 2016, agreeing to a two-year, $50 million deal tha tincludes a team option for 2017-18.
