Dallas Mavericks: 25 Best Players To Play For The Mavericks
By Phil Watson
The Dallas Mavericks acquired Michael Finley as part of a huge trade the day after Christmas in 1996 along with Sam Cassell, A.C. Green and a second-round pick in 1998 from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Jason Kidd, Tony Dumas and Loren Meyer.
Finley was a two-time All-Star with the Mavericks and led the NBA in minutes per game three times (1997-98, 1999-2000 and 2000-01).
He spent his first six-plus seasons in Dallas as a small forward before sliding over to the shooting guard spot his final two seasons with the club.
He left in September 2005 to sign as a free agent with the San Antonio Spurs.
In parts of nine seasons with the Mavericks, Finley averaged 19.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.2 steals in 39.7 minutes per game, shooting .446/.376/.815.
Finley averaged 20.5 points per game as a senior at Wisconsin and was taken with the 21st overall pick by the Suns in the 1995 NBA Draft.
He was a first team All-Rookie selection with Phoenix in 1995-96.
After leaving the Mavs, Finley won a championship with the Spurs in 2007 before he was waived in March 2010. He signed four days later with the Boston Celtics, retiring at the end of the season.
Finley is 45th in NBA history with 37,996 minutes played and 26th with 1,454 three-pointers.
