George McCloud was a lottery pick who had played his way out of the NBA in four seasons, but the Dallas Mavericks took a shot on him on the first of two 10-day contracts in January 1995, after he had played the 1993-94 season in Italy.

McCloud earned a contract for the rest of the season and in 1995-96, taking advantage of a rule change that moved the three-point line closer to the basket, set an NBA single-season record with 678 3-point attempts that stood until it was broken in 2015-16 by Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors.

McCloud was second in the NBA that season in three-pointers.

In February 1997, McCloud was traded with Sam Cassell, Chris Gatling, Jim Jackson and Eric Montross to the New Jersey Nets in exchange for Shawn Bradley, Ed O’Bannon, Robert Pack and Khalid Reeves.

In parts of three seasons in Dallas, McCloud averaged 15.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 30 minutes per game, shooting .420/.380/.818.

McCloud was an All-American as a senior at Florida State, averaging 22.8 points per game, and was taken by the Indiana Pacers with the seventh overall pick in the 1989 NBA Draft.

McCloud went unsigned after the 1992-93 season and went to Italy for the 1993-94 campaign.

Three days after his trade from Dallas, McCloud was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. He signed as a free agent with the Phoenix Suns in September 1997.

In August 1999, he signed with the Denver Nuggets and was traded to the Washington Wizards in October 2002.

Waived by the Wizards four days later, he did not play in the 2002-03 season, attempting a comeback with the Warriors in September 2003. Waived in October of that year, McCloud retired.
