Dallas Mavericks: 25 Best Players To Play For The Mavericks
By Phil Watson
Josh Howard matured into an All-American while at Wake Forest, averaging 19.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game as a senior, but he was something of an unknown quantity.
The Dallas Mavericks selected Howard with the 29th overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft and got a pleasant surprise, for awhile.
He was a second team All-Rookie selection in 2003-04 and was named to the All-Star team in 2007, but he battled injuries throughout his stay with the Mavericks.
Part of the team that reached the 2006 NBA Finals, Howard averaged 14.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals in 38.4 minutes per game in the six-game loss to the Miami Heat, shooting .388/5-for-19/.808.
In February 2010, Howard was traded with Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Caron Butler, DeShawn Stevenson and Brendan Haywood.
In parts of seven seasons with Dallas, Howard averaged 15.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals in 31.7 minutes per game, shooting .454/.340/.776.
Howard signed as a free agent with the Utah Jazz in December 2011 and caught on with the Minnesota Timberwolves in November 2012, waived just a month later.
He spent the 2013-14 season in the D-League and did not play in 2014-15 after appearing with the New Orleans Pelicans Summer League entry.
Howard has not retired, but has not drawn any NBA interest since and was idle in 2015-16, as well.
