Dallas Mavericks: 25 Best Players To Play For The Mavericks
By Phil Watson
While at Michigan State, Jay Vincent made the transition from sophomore role player on a national championship squad to a senior All-American who averaged 22.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
The Dallas Mavericks needed just about everything heading into their second season and took Vincent in the second round of the 1981 NBA Draft.
He provided the Mavs with some early scoring punch, earning first team All-Rookie honors in 1981-82 before transitioning to a sixth man role as the team improved.
In September 1986, Vincent was traded to the Washington Bullets for a 1990 first-round pick.
In five seasons in Dallas, he averaged 16.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 29.6 minutes per game, shooting .482/1-for-15/.784.
Vincent was traded to the Denver Nuggets in November 1987.
He was then dealt to the San Antonio Spurs in January 1989, was swapped to the Philadelphia 76ers in August 1989 and signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in December 1989, 10 days after being waived by the 76ers.
Unsigned after playing the 1989-90 season with the Lakers, Vincent played three seasons in Italy before retiring in 1993.
He pleaded guilty on fraud charges stemming from a scam that defrauded some 20,000 people across the country out of more than $2 million. He was released from prison in February 2016.
