It appeared Michael Dickerson was set up to be a wing scoring threat for the Vancouver Grizzlies for a long time. But just as quickly as it began, it was over.

The Grizzlies acquired Dickerson from the Houston Rockets in August 1999 along with Othella Harrington, Antoine Carr, Brent Price and a 2003 first-round pick as part of a three-team deal that included them acquiring a 2002 second-round pick from the Orlando Magic.

to Orlando.

Dickerson settled in at the shooting guard spot and averaged 18.2 points per game in his first season with the Grizzlies and put up more than 16 a game the following season.

But injuries to his groin and hamstring wouldn’t go away, leading to a stress fracture in his leg that sidelined him for all but four games in the Grizzlies’ debut season in Memphis in 2001-02. The same issues plagued him the following season, restricting him to only six appearances.

He retired in October 2003, unable to shake the injury bug.

In four seasons in Vancouver and Memphis, Dickerson averaged 16.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.1 steals in 36.6 minutes per game on .425/.392/.802 shooting.

Dickerson had helped Arizona to its first national championship as a junior and as a senior was an All-American, averaging 18 points a game.

The Rockets selected him with the 14th overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft and he earned second team All-Rookie honors in the lockout-shortened 1998-99 campaign.

In September 2008, Dickerson signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers in a comeback attempt that lasted just eight days before he was waived. He played the 2009-10 for a team in Spain’s second-tier league before retiring again.

He is 33rd in NBA history with a three-point percentage of .402.
