The New York Knicks tried to make a splash in December 1976, acquiring former NBA MVP Bob McAdoo and Tom McMillen from the Buffalo Braves in exchange for John Gianelli and cash.

McAdoo was a two-time All-Star with the Knicks, finishing fifth in the NBA in minutes per game in 1976-77, placing fourth in scoring in 1977-78 and fifth in 1976-77 and also finishing fifth in rebounding in 1976-77.

In parts of three seasons with New York, McAdoo averaged 26.7 points, 12 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 steals in 39.8 minutes per game, shooting 52.9 percent from the field and 71.6 percent from the line.

Taken second overall out of North Carolina by Buffalo in the 1972 NBA Draft, McAdoo was Rookie of the Year in 1972-73 and MVP in 1974-75, leading the NBA in scoring three times while with the Braves.

In September 1979, McAdoo was sent to the Detroit Pistons as part of the compensation for Boston signing free agent M.L. Carr.

He was waived by Detroit in March 1981 and signed with the New Jersey Nets two days later. In December 1981, McAdoo was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers and was with them for championships in 1982 and 1985.

In January 1986, McAdoo signed with the Philadelphia 76ers before jumping to Italy for the remainder of his career, retiring in 1993 at age 41.

He is 28th in NBA history with an average of 22.1 points per game.

McAdoo was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.
