After going through the expansion draft process and their first NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves were looking for some scoring punch before opening training camp for the first time and in September 1989 took a flyer on former first-round pick Tony Campbell as an unrestricted free agent.
Campbell had been a little-used reserve on a couple of contenders, but Minnesota represented a chance for him to play more than a bit part and he took advantage.
His run with the Timberwolves ended in September 1992 when he was traded to the
for a second-round pick in 1996.
In three seasons in Minnesota, Campbell averaged 20.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.3 steals in 35.9 minutes per game, shooting .451/.250/.796.
Taken 20th overall out of Ohio State by the Detroit Pistons in the 1984 NBA Draft, Campbell left in October 1987 to sign as a veteran free agent with the Washington Bullets, but was waived in November 1987.
Playing most of the season in the Continental Basketball Association, Campbell signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in March 1988 and wound up with a championship ring for that 1988 season.
In January 1994, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. Released by the Mavericks in September 1994, Campbell signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers in October 1994.
Unsigned as a free agent in the summer of 1995, Campbell played a season in Greece and another in the CBA before retiring in 1997.
