Al Jefferson had been an All-Rookie pick for the Boston Celtics, a rarity for a player straight out of high school, and was considered the centerpiece of the return package the Minnesota Timberwolves got in July 2007 when they acquired Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and two first-round picks in 2009 from Boston in exchange for Kevin Garnett.

Jefferson was fifth in the NBA in rebounding in 2007-08 and bulled his way to the hoop with regularity before being traded to the Utah Jazz in July 2010 in exchange for Kosta Koufos and first-round picks in 2011 and 2012.

In three seasons in Minnesota, Jefferson averaged 20.1 points, 10.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 blocks in 34.7 minutes per game, shooting .499/0-for-13/.714.

Chosen 15th overall out of Prentiss (Miss.) High School by Boston in the 2004 NBA Draft, Jefferson eventually signed with the Charlotte Bobcats as a free agent in July 2013 and earned All-NBA honors in 2013-14.

Limited to 47 games in 2015-16 because of calf and knee injuries, Jefferson played more off the bench than as a starter for the Hornets, averaging 12.0 points and 6.4 rebounds in 23.3 minutes per game, while shooting .485/—/.649.

He signed a three-year, $30 million free agent deal with the Indiana Pacers on July 8, 2016.
