The NBA didn’t do its new expansion teams a lot of favors in 1989, handing the Minnesota Timberwolves the 10th overall pick in its first NBA Draft.
The fledgling Wolves used that pick on UCLA point guard Pooh Richardson, who had averaged more than 15 points and seven assists a game as a senior.

In three seasons in Minnesota, Richardson averaged 15 points, eight assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 35.2 minutes per game, shooting .466/.322/.611.
He was later traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in June 1994. After he was waived in September 1999, Richardson played a season in Italy before retiring in 2000.
He is 37th in NBA history with an average of 6.5 assists per game.
