Quinn Buckner was never a scorer, averaging almost nine points a game as a senior at Indiana, where he played for college basketball’s last undefeated national champion.
The Milwaukee Bucks chose Buckner with the seventh overall pick in the 1976 NBA Draft and he built a career on defense.
A four-time All-Defensive selection with the Bucks, Buckner was third in the NBA in steals in 1977-78 and 1980-81 and fourth in 1976-77 and 1981-82.
He was traded to the Boston Celtics in September 1982 in exchange for the rights to retired Dave Cowens, who was attempting a comeback.
In six seasons in Milwaukee, Buckner averaged 10.3 points, 5.2 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals in 26.4 minutes per game, shooting .469/.269/.660.
Buckner was part of an NBA championship team with the Celtics and was traded to the Indiana Pacers in September 1985. He retired after he was waived in January 1986.
He coached the Dallas Mavericks for one season, going 13-69 in 1993-94.
Buckner is 22nd in NBA history with an average of 1.9 steals per game.
