Milwaukee Bucks: 25 Best Players To Play For The Bucks
By Phil Watson
Marques Johnson earned consensus national player of the year honors as a senior at UCLA, averaging more than 21 points and 11 rebounds per game and the Milwaukee Bucks took the small forward with the third overall pick in the 1977 NBA Draft.
He was an All-Rookie selection in 1977-78 and was also a four-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA pick with the Bucks as the first piece of their second act as NBA title contenders.
Johnson was third in the NBA in scoring in 1978-79, as well.
But in a September 1984 trade, Johnson was sent to the Los Angeles Clippers along with Junior Bridgeman, Harvey Catchings and cash in exchange for Terry Cummings, Ricky Pierce and Craig Hodges.
In seven seasons in Milwaukee, Johnson averaged 21 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.3 steals in 34.8 minutes per game, shooting .530/.145/.736.
With the Clippers, Johnson was an All-Star in 1986, but missed most of three seasons with a severe neck injury.
He attempted a comeback with the Golden State Warriors in October 1989, but retired after being waived in November of that year.
