Larry Hughes was something of an enigma as he hit free agency, but the Washington Wizards took a chance and signed him to a three-year deal in July 2002.

Hughes played point guard in his first season with the Wizards before moving over to the off-guard spot. He was named All-Defensive in 2004-05 after leading the NBA in steals, but never played more than 67 games in a season while in Washington.

He left the Wizards to sign with the

Cleveland Cavaliers

as a free agent in August 2005.

In three seasons in Washington, Hughes averaged 17.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.9 steals in 34.7 minutes per game, shooting .428/.321/.775.

He was the eighth overall pick out of Saint Louis by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1998 NBA Draft and was traded to the Golden State Warriors in a three-team deal in February 2000.

In February 2008, he was in another three-team swap, going to the Chicago Bulls. In February 2009, Hughes was traded to the New York Knicks and in a three-team deal in February 2010, he went to the Sacramento Kings, who waived him five days later.

In March 2010, he signed with the Charlotte Bobcats before sitting out the 2010-11 season.

Hughes signed with the Orlando Magic in December 2011 and retired after he was waived in February 2012.
