By Phil Watson
Juwan Howard emerged as an All-American as a junior at Michigan, averaging almost 21 points and nine rebounds per game before turning pro. The Washington Bullets took the combo forward with the fifth overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft.
Howard was an All-Rookie selection in 1994-95 and an All-Star in 1996, as well as earning All-NBA honors in 1995-96.
He was fourth in the NBA in minutes per game in 1995-96 and fifth in 1996-97.
Howard was with the team for its transition from the Bullets to the Wizards before being traded with Calvin Booth and Obinna Ekezie to the Dallas Mavericks in February 2001 in exchange for Christian Laettner, Etan Thomas, Hubert Davis, Courtney Alexander, Loy Vaught and cash.
In parts of seven seasons in Washington, Howard averaged 18.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and a steal in 38.5 minutes per game, shooting .478/.118/.735.
Howard’s journey was just beginning. In February 2002 he was dealt to the Denver Nuggets before signing as a free agent with the Orlando Magic in July 2003.
In June 2004, Howard was traded to the Houston Rockets and was on the move in June 2007, traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, who waived him in October 2007.
He signed with the Mavericks three days later and returned to Denver as a free agent in October 2008. Waived in November of the same year, Howard was idle until signing with the Charlotte Bobcats in December 2008.
In September 2009, he signed with the Portland Trail Blazers and joined the Miami Heat as a free agent in July 2010 and was part of the Heat’s 2012 championship team.
Howard returned to the Heat in March 2013, first on two 10-day contracts and then for the rest of the season, but did not appear in a playoff game as Miami repeated as NBA champions.
Unsigned as a free agent in the summer of 2013, Howard retired and moved into his current role as an assistant coach with the Heat.
He is 34th in NBA history with 1,208 games.
