The Orlando Magic brought in forward Donald Royal as a free agent in August 1992 and for four seasons, he settled in as the primary backup at small forward, even starting for most of the 1994-95 season.
Royal also started six games during the Magic’s run to the NBA Finals in 1995, where they were swept by the Houston Rockets.
and a second-round pick in 1999.
In December 1997, the Magic brought Royal back on a 10-day contract. He left Orlando for the final time when he was waived in January 1998.
In parts of six seasons for Orlando, Royal averaged 7.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 20.3 minutes per game, shooting .488/0-for-11/.772.
A third-round pick out of Notre Dame by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1987 NBA Draft, Royal played two seasons in the Continental Basketball Association after he was waived by Cleveland in training camp.
He got his first NBA experience with the Minnesota Timberwolves after signing in September 1989, but in 1990 he opted to play in Israel.
Royal signed with the Magic in September 1991, after his rights were renounced by Minnesota, but didn’t make the team out of training camp. He signed with the San Antonio Spurs in December 1991 after playing briefly in the CBA and played the remainder of the season there before he was waived in June 1992.
After going to the Warriors in 1996, Royal was traded again in February 1997, sent to the Charlotte Hornets for Scott Burrell.
After he was waived by the Magic in 1998, Royal signed a 10-day contract with Charlotte before signing on for the remainder of the 1997-98 season.
Following the lockout in 1999, Royal signed with the Milwaukee Bucks, but was waived before the truncated season started and opted to retire.
