The Magic renounced Smith’s rights in June 1992 and he entered a three-year retirement before making a brief comeback in Sweden in 1996-97.

Smith was a second-round pick of the Denver Nuggets out of Jacksonville in the 1986 NBA Draft and played parts of two seasons with the Nuggets before he was sold to Golden State in December 1987.

He played parts of two seasons with the Warriors before coming to Orlando in the expansion draft.

He worked in the Magic front office from 1996-98 and returned to the NBA in the Warriors front office from 1999-03.

Returning to Orlando, he was director of player development for two years before becoming co-general manager with Dave Twardzik in March 2005, assuming the duties solely in May 2006. Smith remained on the job until he agreed to resign in May 2012.

Smith was head coach of the D-League’s Grand Rapids Drive for two seasons through 2015-16 before being promoted to director of player development and assistant coach by the Drive’s parent club, the Detroit Pistons, in June 2016.
