Prior to the start of the season, the New Jersey Nets acquired Mike Newlin in October 1979 from the Houston Rockets in exchange for a second-round pick in 1980.
Always a solid performer, Newlin broke out with the Nets.
He was third in the NBA in free-throw shooting in 1980-81 and fifth in 1979-80.
In June 1981, he was dealt to the New York Knicks in exchange for Mike Woodson.
In two seasons in New Jersey, Newlin averaged 21.2 points, 3.9 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 34.5 minutes per game, shooting .478/.302/.886.
Newlin was a second-round pick out of Utah by the Rockets in the 1971 NBA Draft and retired after he was waived by the Knicks in October 1982.
He is 27th in NBA history with a free-throw percentage of .870.
