Keith Van Horn was a two-time All-American coming off a senior season at Utah during which he averaged 22 points and more than nine rebounds per game.
The New Jersey Nets made a draft night deal in June 1997 to acquire the No. 2 overall pick along with Michael Cage, Don MacLean and Lucious Harris from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Jim Jackson, Eric Montross and the rights to seventh overall selection Tim Thomas and No. 21 overall choice Anthony Parker.
Van Horn was an All-Rookie selection in 1997-98 and was fifth in the NBA in scoring in 1998-99 for the Nets.
In the 2002 NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers, Van Horn averaged 10.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 30.3 minutes per game, shooting .386/5-for-12/3-for-4. L.A. swept the series in four games.
But in August 2002, Van Horn was dealt back to Philadelphia with Todd MacCulloch in exchange for Dikembe Mutombo.
He came back to the Nets in a blockbuster deal in February 2008, acquired with Devin Harris, Trenton Hassell, Maurice Ager, DeSagana Diop and first-round picks in 2008 and 2010 from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Jason Kidd, Antoine Wright and Malik Allen.
But Van Horn hadn’t played in the NBA since 2006 and was waived by the Nets in October 2008.
In five seasons in New Jersey, Van Horn averaged 18.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 34.7 minutes per game, shooting .434/.346/.837.
Van Horn was part of a four-team deal in July 2003 that wound up with him going to the New York Knicks. In February 2004, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in a three-team swap.
In February 2005, he landed with the Mavericks.
