The New Jersey Nets landed a shooter as part of a three-team trade in January 1991, acquiring Drazen Petrovic and a second-round pick in 1993 from the Portland Trail Blazers and also getting Terry Mills from the Denver Nuggets, while sending Greg Anderson and a first-round selection in 1992 to Denver.
Petrovic shined with the Nets, earning All-NBA honors in 1992-93 and finishing second in the NBA in 3-point shooting in 1991-92 and third in 1992-93.
But he was killed June 7, 1993, at the age of 28 when a car in which he was riding was
that lost control on a rain-slick autobahn between Nuremburg and Munich, Germany.
In parts of three seasons in New Jersey, Petrovic averaged 19.5 points, 2.9 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 33.7 minutes per game, shooting .511/.437/.846.
Petrovic was a third-round pick by the Trail Blazers while playing for Cibona in Croatia and signed with the Blazers in 1989 after playing a season in Spain.
He is fourth in NBA history with a 3-point percentage of .437 and was posthumously inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.
