Brooklyn Nets: 25 Best Players To Play For The Nets
By Phil Watson
The New York Nets didn’t draft Memphis State junior Larry Kenon, but in the ABA that sort of detail seldom mattered.
The Nets signed the power forward who had averaged more than 20 points and nearly 17 rebounds per game in his lone season at Memphis State and gave up Jim Ard and Johnny Baum to the Memphis Tams, who had held his draft rights.
Kenon made a big splash, earning All-Rookie honors in 1973-74 and being selected as an All-Star twice.
As a rookie, Kenon helped the Nets to the ABA title, averaging 15.8 points per game in the five-game victory in the ABA Finals over the Utah Stars.
In June 1975, he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Swen Nater.
In two seasons in New York, Kenon averaged 17.3 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals in 36.1 minutes per game, shooting .486/1-for-3/.740.
Kenon was a third-round pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 1973 NBA Draft, but never played for them, jumping to the NBA with the Spurs in 1976.
With San Antonio, he was an ABA All-Star in 1976 and a two-time NBA All-Star before he signed with the Chicago Bulls as a veteran free agent in September 1980.
Waived in November 1982, he signed in December of that year with the Golden State Warriors and had his contract sold to the Cleveland Cavaliers in January 1983.
Waived by the Cavs in March 1983, Kenon retired.
He is 20th in ABA history with 277 steals and 11th with averages of 36.1 minutes and 11.1 rebounds per game.
