Denver Nuggets: 25 Best Players To Play For The Nuggets
By Phil Watson
The Denver Nuggets acquired the rights to 18th overall pick Ty Lawson out of North Carolina on draft night in 2009, sending a 2010 first-round pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Lawson was a reserve at point guard for most of his first two seasons before taking over as the starter in 2011-12.
His last season in Denver, however, was a turbulent one, as he was arrested in January and July on suspicion of driving under the influence.
His January arrest in Denver came after he was driving almost twice the speed limit. His July arrest came in Los Angeles and he was sent to a residential rehabilitation center.
Despite the off-court drama, Lawson finished third in the NBA in assists in both 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Six days after his arrest in L.A., the Nuggets traded Lawson with a second-round pick in 2017 to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Nick Johnson, Joey Dorsey, Kostas Papanikolaou, Pablo Prigioni and a first-round selection in 2016.
In six seasons with Denver, Lawson averaged 14.2 points, 6.6 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 31.1 minutes per game, shooting .466/.369/.771.
The Lawson experience in Houston was a bust, as he was waived in March 2016 and signed with the Indiana Pacers shortly thereafter. He is currently unsigned for 2016-17.
His average of 6.2 assists per game is 47th-best in NBA history.
