The Denver Nuggets acquired All-Star point guard Nick Van Exel in a draft night trade in June 1998, sending Tony Battie and the rights to 23rd overall pick Tyronn Lue to the Los Angeles Lakers to get the left-hander.

While with the Nuggets, Van Exel was second in the NBA in assists in 1999-2000 and third in 2000-01.

In parts of four seasons with the Nuggets, Van Exel averaged 17.7 points, 8.4 assists and 3.4 rebounds in 37.5 minutes per game, shooting .402/.341/.809.

A second-round pick of the Lakers out of Cincinnati in the 1993 NBA Draft, Van Exel was later traded to the Golden State Warriors in August 2003 and dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers in July 2004.

In August 2005, Van Exel signed as a free agent with the San Antonio Spurs. He spent one season in San Antonio before retiring in May 2006.

Van Exel is 24th in NBA history with 1,528 3-pointers, 36th with an average of 6.6 assists per game and 38th with 5,777 assists.
