Denver Nuggets: 25 Best Players To Play For The Nuggets
By Phil Watson
The Denver Nuggets acquired the rights to Antonio McDyess, the second overall pick out of Alabama in the 1995 NBA Draft, from the Los Angeles Clippers in a draft-night trade, also acquiring Randy Woods in exchange for Rodney Rogers and the rights to No. 15 overall pick Brent Barry.
McDyess was an All-Rookie pick in 1995-96, but his stay was short. In a three-team trade in October 1997, McDyess was sent to the Phoenix Suns in a deal in which Denver got first-round picks in 1998, 1999 and 2001 as well as second-rounders in 2000 and 2002 from the Suns.
But McDyess was released by the Suns in June 1998 and, after the NBA lockout, re-signed with Denver in January 1999.
In his second stint with the Nuggets, McDyess was an All-NBA selection in 1998-99 and an All-Star in 2001, finishing fifth in the league in rebounding in 2000-01.
But early in the 2001-02 season, McDyess ruptured his patellar tendon and missed the final 72 games.
On draft night in June 2002, McDyess was traded to the New York Knicks along with the rights to 25th overall pick Frank Williams in exchange for Marcus Camby, Mark Jackson and the rights to No. 7 overall selection Nene.
In six seasons with Denver, McDyess averaged 18.2 points, nine rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.6 assists in 34 minutes per game, shooting .486/.140/.679.
In January 2004, he was traded back to the Suns before signing with the Detroit Pistons as a free agent in July 2004.
In November 2008, McDyess was traded to the Nuggets for a third time, acquired with Chauncey Billups and Cheikh Samb in exchange for Allen Iverson, but he never suited up for Denver before he was released a week later.
McDyess re-signed in December with the Pistons for the remainder of the season before joining the San Antonio Spurs as a free agent in July 2009. Waived by the Spurs in December 2011, McDyess retired.
