Chicago Bulls: 25 Best Players To Play For The Bulls
By Phil Watson
The Chicago Bulls used the ninth overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft to take UNLV guard Reggie Theus, who had averaged almost 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game as a junior before turning pro.
Turns out he was just getting started.
Theus was an All-Rookie selection in 1978-79 and was a two-time All-Star for the Bulls.
In February 1984, he was traded to the Kansas City Kings in exchange for Steve Johnson, a second-round pick in 1984 and two second-round selections in 1985.
In parts of six seasons in Chicago, Theus averaged 18.8 points, 5.6 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 33.8 minutes per game, shooting .477/.237/.806.
Theus moved with the Kings to Sacramento before he was traded in June 1988 to the Atlanta Hawks. Selected by the Orlando Magic in the June 1989 expansion draft, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets in June 1990 and played two seasons in Italy and Greece before retiring in 1992.
He has coached in the ABA and the D-League and was head coach in Sacramento in 2007-08, going 44-62 in parts of two seasons.
Theus had a record of 41-23 in two seasons at New Mexico State from 2005-07 and has been head coach at Cal State Northridge since 2013, going 36-62 in three seasons.
Before entering coaching for real, he played a fictional high school basketball coach in the Saturday morning sitcom Hang Time for three seasons.
He is 26th in NBA history with 6,453 assists and 44th with an average of 6.3 assists per game.
