Chicago Bulls: 25 Best Players To Play For The Bulls
By Phil Watson
Part of a deep Notre Dame team, Orlando Woolridge averaged more than 14 points and six rebounds per game as a senior, but his athleticism made him an attractive pro prospect. The Chicago Bulls banked on that, selecting Woolridge sixth overall in the 1981 NBA Draft.
They got a player who could score either as a starter or off the bench.
He left the Bulls to sign as a veteran free agent with the New Jersey Nets in October 1986, with the Nets sending a first-round pick in 1989 and second-round selections in 1988 and 1989 as compensation.
In five seasons in Chicago, Woolridge averaged 17.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 29.4 minutes per game, shooting .532/.139/.736.
Woolridge signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers in August 1988 and was traded to the Denver Nuggets in August 1990.
In August 1991, he was sent to the Detroit Pistons and was traded in February 1993 to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Woolridge signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in November 1993, playing there for one season, and left to play two seasons in Italy before retiring in 1996.
He coached two seasons in the WNBA with the Los Angeles Sparks but died May 31, 2012, at his parents’ home in Mansfield, La., after spending several months in hospice care because of a chronic heart condition. He was 52.
