Steve Kerr was hanging on by a thread, having averaged less than 10 minutes per game the previous season, when he signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bulls in September 1993.

He became a vital role player for a team that would win three NBA titles and led the NBA in 3-point shooting in 1994-95, finishing second in 1995-96 and 1996-97, fourth in 1993-94 and fifth in 1997-98.

Kerr averaged five points in 18.8 minutes per game off the bench in the 1996 NBA Finals, shooting .303/.182/6-for-7 in a six-game victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.

He cemented his legacy in Chicago the following year. While averaging just 4.3 points and an assist in 19.5 minutes per game against the Utah Jazz in the 1997 NBA Finals, shooting .360/4-for-16/4-for-4, it was Kerr’s jumper with five seconds left that sealed the Game 6 victory that iced a second straight title.

He averaged 3.8 points and 2.5 assists in 20.7 minutes per game, shooting .350/5-for-13/4-for-4 in the 1998 NBA Finals as Chicago beat the Jazz again in six games.

In January 1999, he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Chuck Person and a first-round pick in 2000.

In five seasons in Chicago, Kerr averaged 8.2 points, 2.2 assists and 1.5 rebounds in 23.2 minutes per game, shooting .507/.479/.855.

Kerr was a second-round pick out of Arizona by the Phoenix Suns in the 1988 NBA Draft. He was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in September 1989.

In December 1992, he was dealt to the Orlando Magic.

Traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in July 2001, he was re-acquired by the Spurs in August 2002 and was part of San Antonio’s 1999 and 2003 title teams before retiring in August 2003.

Kerr later was the general manager of the Suns from June 2007 through June 2010 and has been coach of the Golden State Warriors since May 2014, going 140-24 in the regular season and 31-14 in the playoffs while leading the team to the 2015 NBA title.

He is the NBA’s all-time leader with a 3-point percentage of .454.
