Utah Jazz: 25 Best Players To Play For The Jazz
By Phil Watson
The Utah Jazz received Ben Poquette and a second-round pick in 1980 in July 1979 as compensation for the Detroit Pistons’ signing of veteran free agent Jim McElroy.
The deal worked out much better for the Jazz than it did for Detroit. Poquette started at center and manned the power forward spot as well until his contract was sold to the Cleveland Cavaliers in October 1983.
In four seasons in Utah, Poquette averaged nine points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.6 blocks in 28.6 minutes per game, shooting .507/.304/.788.
His mark of 342 personal fouls in 1980-81 still stands as a franchise single-season record.
He was a second-round pick out of Central Michigan by the Pistons in the 1977 NBA Draft. In February 1987, he was traded to the Chicago Bulls and after going unsigned that summer, played two seasons in Italy.
Poquette signed with the Orlando Magic in September 1989 but did not make the team, getting waived in October of that year and returning for a final season in Italy before retiring in 1990.
