Sacramento Kings: 25 Best Players To Play For The Kings
By Phil Watson
Johnny Green had been a three-time All-Star early in his career with the New York Knicks, but released by the Philadelphia 76ers after the 1968-69 season, it looked like the end of the line for the veteran.
A phone call to Cincinnati Royals coach Bob Cousy changed that.
The Royals signed Green in September 1969 and he came in to back up at power forward, but an early-season trade thrust him into the starting lineup.
He played well enough to make a fourth All-Star appearance for Cincinnati in 1971 and led the NBA in field-goal percentage in both 1969-70 and 1970-71.
He remained with the franchise through its first season as the Kansas City-Omaha Kings before retiring at age 39 after the 1972-73 season.
In four years with the club, Green averaged 12.4 points, eight rebounds and 1.3 assists in 25.2 minutes per game, shooting 57.5 percent from the floor and 60.4 percent from the foul line.
The fifth overall pick by the Knicks out of Michigan State in 1959, Green was traded to the Baltimore Bullets in November 1965 and was selected by the San Diego Rockets in the May 1967 expansion draft.
In January 1968, Green was traded to Philadelphia.
He is 50th in NBA history with 9,083 rebounds.
