The Sacramento Kings got the best of their rivals down Interstate 80 in November 1991 when they acquired former Rookie of the Year Mitch Richmond along with Les Jepsen from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Billy Owens.

Richmond’s career erupted in Sacramento. He was a six-time All-Star, including the MVP of the 1995 All-Star Game and a five-time All-NBA performer.

Richmond was fourth in the NBA in 3-pointers in both 1995-96 and 1996-97 and was fifth in the league in scoring in 1996-97 and 1997-98.

However, the Kings made the playoffs only once during Richmond’s tenure and in May 1998, he was traded with Otis Thorpe to the Washington Wizards for Chris Webber.

In seven seasons in Sacramento, Richmond averaged 23.3 points, 4.1 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 37.8 minutes per game, shooting .453/.404/.847.

Taken fifth overall out of Kansas State by the Warriors in the 1988 NBA Draft, Richmond later signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers in July 2001, retiring after dribbling out the clock in the NBA Finals to earn his lone championship ring.

Richmond is 33rd in NBA history with 1,326 3-pointers, 38th with 20,497 points and 38th with an average of 21 points per game.

He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.
