By Phil Watson
The Rochester Royals selected Cincinnati standout Jack Twyman, who had averaged almost 25 points and more than 16 rebounds per game as a senior, in the second round of the 1955 NBA Draft and soon discovered they had a star on their hands.
He was a six-time All-Star with the Royals, who moved to Cincinnati after his second season. Twyman also earned All-NBA honors twice and led the league in field-goal percentage in 1957-58.
He was also second in that category in 1960-61 and third in both 1956-57 and 1961-62. Twyman finished second in the NBA in scoring in 1959-60, third in 1958-59 and fifth in 1960-61.
Twyman spent his entire career with the Royals, retiring in May 1966. In 11 seasons, he averaged 19.2 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 31.8 minutes per game, shooting 45 percent from the floor and 77.8 percent from the foul line.
Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983, Twyman died May 30, 2012, at the age of 78 from complications stemming from blood cancer.
