Otis Birdsong had averaged more than 30 points a game as a senior at the University of Houston and the Kansas City Kings, looking for backcourt scoring, used the second overall pick in the 1977 NBA Draft to take the All-American.
Birdsong would become a three-time All-Star with the Kings and an All-NBA pick in 1980-81.

In four years for Kansas City, Birdsong averaged 21.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals in 33.1 minutes per game, shooting .513/.282/.703.
Birdsong was an All-Star for a fourth time with the Nets in 1984 and was waived by New Jersey in August 1988.
He was out of the league until March 1989, when he signed a 10-day contract with the Boston Celtics, eventually signing for the remainder of the season before retiring at season’s end.
