The Misunderstood Greatness Of Tim Duncan
The Numbers
The primary knock on Tim Duncan is that he never had eye-popping statistics. He kept plugging away as the likes of Kevin Garnett and Chris Webber stuffed the stat sheet, thus overshadowing the vitality of consistency.
For all of the fuss about his numbers not being sensational, Duncan has a resume that puts all of that talk to rest.
Duncan finishes his career at No. 14 on the all-time scoring list with 26,496 points. He’s also No. 5 all-time with 3,020 blocks, No. 6 all-time with 15,091 rebounds, and No. 10 all-time with 3,859 offensive rebounds.
For a player who didn’t offer much statistically, one can’t help but wonder how Top 15 all-time rankings in every key statistical category for a big man has been so easily overlooked.
The longevity is a product of the consistency—consistency that never wavered. He averaged at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in nine different seasons, exceeded 17 points per game an additional five times, and pulled down at least 10 rebounds per game in 13 campaigns.
And that’s just the regular season.
