Chicago Bulls: 5 Takeaways From Dwyane Wade Signing
What Happened To Youth Movement?
Following the press conference that introduced their first-round draft pick, Denzel Valentine, general manager Gar Forman spoke on the direction that the team was heading.
"“We had a great run for 10 years,” Forman said via ESPN. “The last decade, we’ve got the best record in the Eastern Conference. We’ve put together a group that we thought was highly competitive and probably had a chance to get to a championship level. The injuries obviously derailed us quite a bit, especially the last few years. And then last year there were just so many of them. But we’ve got to put this back together now, going younger, more athletic and building it back up moving into the future.”"
The two key words that stand out from that statement are young and athletic. A few days ago, the team reached an agreement on a two-year deal with Rajon Rondo. Yes, Rondo is a gifted passer and he led the league in assists last year with 11.9 per contest. However, he is neither younger nor more athletic than Rose.
Along with that, while adding a future Hall-of-Famer to the mix certainly makes for a nice story, at 34 years of age, Wade’s best years are more than likely behind him. So while the organization did avoid a total rebuild, it is uncertain as to whether or not they have gotten significantly better.
