Marvin Williams Takes Pay Cut To Remain In Charlotte
Addition: Marvin Williams: four years, $54.5 million
Coming off of a career year, Marvin Williams entered free agency as a possible candidate for “Most Likely To Get Overpaid.” Instead, the former Tar Heel stays home— and for only $54.5 million.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, who broke news of the agreement, Williams had offers upwards of $15 million from other teams, but chose to remain with Charlotte.
Williams averaged 11.7 points per game, a career high 6.4 rebounds per game and upped his three-point shooting to 40.2 percent last season. While he won’t ever live up to being drafted before Chris Paul (Atlanta, never forget), Williams has developed into the prototypical 3-and-D forward for the current NBA.
The 6’9″ forward is the rare NBA player who looks like they could fit on any team: added to Cleveland Cavaliers and he looks like a super-sub and small-ball star: add him to the San Antonio Spurs and he has the length and skills to fit perfectly in the second unit.
Add him to the Portland Trail Blazers or Boston Celtics and he provides a strong third or fourth option offensively while not needing to take the ball out of their stars hands. He’s really capable of filling whatever role is needed.
