Derrick Rose: Top 5 Moments With The Chicago Bulls
3. Mar. 18, 2009: Bulls at Boston Celtics (Game 1 of Eastern Conference Quarterfinals)
The Boston Celtics were the defending champions, but they were without their defensive anchor, Kevin Garnett, who was sidelined with a knee injury. Meanwhile, the Bulls had advanced past the first round of the playoffs only once since the 1997-98 season.
Would the recently named Rookie of the Year succumb to the pressure of his first playoff game?
Absolutely not.
In a game that featured a memorable back and forth battle at the point guard position between Rose and Rajon Rondo (29 points, nine rebounds and seven assists), not only did Rose hold his own in regards to the individual matchup with a 36-11-4 stat line, he also helped lead the Bulls to a thrilling 105-103 overtime victory.
How impressive was this win?
For starters, Rose’s 36 points tied Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for most points in a postseason debut. Secondly, Chicago had not beaten the Celtics in 10 postseason games since the Chicago Stags beat Boston in the 1948 Basketball Association of America quarterfinals.
The Bulls would eventually lose the series in seven games, with Rose averaging 19.7 points, 6.4 assists and 6.3 rebounds per contest.
