Mike Conley to Sacramento

The Memphis Grizzlies have thoroughly committed to re-signing Mike Conley—or not. General manager Chris Wallace unequivocally stated that he plans to re-sign Conley, and then proceeded to select point guard Wade Baldwin IV in the first round of the 2016 NBA Draft.

Conley will have a vast number of options in free agency, but what if he chooses to follow his former head coach to California?

Dave Joerger, who led the Grizzlies to three consecutive postseason appearances, is now head coach of the Sacramento Kings. It’s there that he’ll look to maximize the value of All-NBA center DeMarcus Cousins and former Grizzlies star Rudy Gay.

Conley could be intrigued by the prospect of reuniting with both Gay and Joerger, thus providing the stability at point guard that the Kings so desperately need.

Rajon Rondo may have averaged more assists, but Conley provides a greater sense of consistency. He’s helped lead Memphis to six consecutive postseason appearances, has an even-keel demeanor, and is a clutch performer who plays up to the level of his competition.

If Conley were to join Cousins, Gay, and Joerger in Sacramento, the Kings wouldn’t be the afterthought that we’ve come to expect them to be.
