5 Roster Moves The Los Angeles Lakers Need To Make
3. Sign Big
Last season the Los Angeles Lakers looked for a big center who could be a rim protector and anchor the defense for the Lakers.
They signed Roy Hibbert to a one-year, $15 million deal. He did average 1.3 blocks per game, but he was not good enough for the contract that he signed. If Los Angeles re-signs him, it will be at a much reduced rate.
Los Angeles need to target Bismack Biyombo from the Toronto Raptors to be this defensive presence. As a back up he averaged 1.6 blocks per game and with greater playing time will be a true defensive anchor for the Lakers.
He is also a top rebounder, averaging 8.0 per game as a backup center for Toronto. Combining the rebounding presence of Biyombo with the up-and-coming talent of Julius Randle and second chance points for opponents are going to be difficult to come by.
Biyombo needs to still be a backup though. The Lakers need to sign Al Horford of the Atlanta Hawks. The center from Atlanta has embodied team basketball for his career. The young Lakers need to move on from the Kobe Bryant era.
I did struggle with the Mamba, but he was simply a brilliant player who took the Lakers on his back when they needed him. These Lakers do not have anywhere near that level of talent and have to learn good team ball.
Al Horford is the player that can help bridge the gap between the Mamba era and the next exciting era for the Lakers.
