The San Antonio Spurs’ Free Agency Options: The Unorthodox Edition
Norris Cole, Guard
Norris Cole helped fuel the Heat when he was their backup guard and was a part of the 2012 and 2013 championship teams. Financial considerations saw him traded to the New Orleans Pelicans two seasons ago. Cole was one of the Pelicans players who tended to give the Spurs the blues whenever they played.
This season he shot 80 percent from the free throw line and averaged 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists per game while helping to keep the injury-plagued Pelicans afloat.
He’s as fast as Parker used to be, and manages to get his own shots, as well as create shots for his teammates. He would do well as an immediate, battle-tested point guard behind Parker. And he’s only 27.
Cole will need to be paid more than the $3.3 million he earned as a qualifying offer with the Pels last season, but the numbers are probably workable for him.
