Why Not Both?

It’s obvious that the Mavs are looking to upgrade at positions of need, but they intend on taking it a step further.

As reported by multiple sources, the team wants to sign both Conley AND Whiteside this summer to add to their current group of starts consisting of Wesley Matthews and Dirk Nowitzki (after a deal is done).

You may wonder why I left Chandler Parsons out of that conversation. Should the Mavs land both players, they would have three max contracts on the team: Matthews, Conley and Whiteside.

With Parsons demanding a max, there’s no way they could re-sign him this summer. It’s not necessarily the fact that he wants max money either, it’s the fact that the team isn’t going to give him max money.

  • That would leave a hole open at the small forward position with players like Evan Fournier (restricted) and Kent Bazemore (unrestricted) coming into play (as reported by RealGM).

There’s no guarantee the team would be able to lure both Conley and Whiteside to Dallas, but if they did, the team would certainly be much better on both ends of the floor. Their offense would increase slightly, but the biggest change would be on the defensive side of things.

With both players serving as some of the best defenders at their positions, and Matthews already on the team, the Mavs would instantly have one of the best defensive starting lineups in the league.

The Mavs would be changing up their starting lineup for the fifth straight season, but adding either of the pieces mentioned above (or even both) would be huge for the team’s future.

Many dominoes still have to fall before we know where the Mavs will stand for 2016-17, but there are already some encouraging signs as we approach free agency. Could this be the summer where the front office finally breaks through?
