40. Dan Roundfield

Indiana Pacers 1976-78, Atlanta Hawks 1978-84, Detroit Pistons 1984-85, Washington Bullets 1985-87

Dan Roundfield was taken 28th overall in the second round by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1975 NBA Draft out of Central Michigan, but the Detroit native opted to sign with the ABA’s Indiana Pacers.

Roundfield came with the Pacers to the NBA the following season, where he wound eventually earn a reputation as a tenacious defender and a terrific rebounder despite a relative lack of size.

Nicknamed “Dr. Rounds,” Roundfield was a five-time All-Defensive selection and was picked for three All-Star games. He was also an All-NBA second team player in 1979-80, the same season he was fifth in the MVP voting.

But playoff success wasn’t to be for Roundfield, who never got past the conference semifinals. In 1979, the underdog Hawks took the defending champion and top-seeded Washington Bullets to seven games in the Eastern semis, but lost a 100-94 decision at Landover, Md., in Game 7.

Roundfield died Aug. 6, 2012, in Aruba. He drowned after he was able to rescue his wife when her raft began to drift away from a beach in a strong current.

The final tally on Roundfield’s NBA playoff career:

NBA Finals: 0-0
Conference Finals: 0-0
Conference Semifinals: 0-3
First Round: 2-4
